John Proctor – A Tragic Hero In The Crucible

John Proctor is a tragic character in The Crucible. Proctor firstly had a tragic flaw. He was too proud to take on a number of unfavorable events. Proctor eventually died. However, Proctor does die for a crime he did not commit. A tragic hero must also have a complete turn of fortune. Proctor was thrown off his feet when Abigail accused Elizabeth of accusing him of adultery. The audience should feel empathy for the fallen hero. This is known as catharsis. Proctor is hanged at the end of the play, leaving the audience in deep sorrow. John Proctor is a tragic character because he includes all of the elements that make a tragic hero like hamartia. Peripeteia. Catharsis. And despite not being born into noble families, he still possesses many noble qualities. John Proctor’s fatal flaw in The Crucible was his overbearing hubrism, which led to his untimely death. Pride plays an interesting part in John Proctor’s life. Proctor is asked at the end to sign the piece, and he refuses. This exclamative shows the reader how valuable his name is for him. Proctor takes pride in his own achievements, and thinks it is better to die than to ruin his reputation. Proctor has an internal conflict between pride and conscience. He is very concerned about his reputation and the society in which he lived. At the time, he was well-respected and respected by the people in his community. He also confessed that he can’t have another person in his (his!) life because he is an adulterer. He would lose all of his status. Proctor was born in Puritan society. He knew that lechery was unacceptable. Proctor made every effort to protect his good name.
