Sally Morris Obituary

Sally Morris, a distinguished member of the community arts movement, passed away at the age of 64 after a brave fight with ovarian cancer. She was associated with the Black-E, Liverpool’s first community arts project, for 40 years and served as a vital figure in her field, becoming a pioneer in the genre.

Throughout her career, Sally exhibited a remarkable zeal and passion for the cause. Her projects included engaging in the creation of animated films with youngsters, interviewing pop king Michael Jackson alongside teenagers, organizing culturally significant events with women and the environment as inspirations, and showcasing events about freedom struggles. Sally’s hands-on leadership skills were invaluable, and she could accomplish tasks such as setting up the PA system, lighting performances, projecting films, editing sound, creating marketing communications, and arranging catering with ease.

Sally’s contribution was not limited to her cultural endeavors but extended to administration and management as well. Sally served as the Black-E’s resident photographer and worked with them to create the Black-E choir. Sally also took on arts-in-play programs for Merseyside Play Action Council, and she was a founding member of the Campaign for Women in the Arts.

Sally was born in Birmingham and went to King Edward VI High School for Girls. She later enrolled at Exeter University and received a degree in English literature. After serving as a lecturer at Widnes Technical College, Cheshire, Sally made Liverpool her home in 1972. Her partner of 32 years, Kevin McIntryre, accompanied her on long cycling trips and cultivated their garden together.

Sally is survived by Kevin, her partner in life and gardening, and two sisters, Irene and Elizabeth. Sally’s selfless and enthusiastic contributions to community arts projects will be remembered as an example of what one person can achieve.
